What grade level is amoeba sisters for? ›

Our focus is high school biology (as Pinky is a former high school biology teacher), but we receive feedback that some of our videos are useful for introductory biology at the college level and other levels that are covering these topics.

Petunia would like to add that Pinky's fun facts are, in fact, frequently not fun. How come only one of you talks in the Amoeba Sisters videos? ​We both focus on our interests so much that Petunia prefers to practice her love of drawing and Pinky prefers to practice her love of teaching.

Amoeba, like other unicellular eukaryotic organisms, reproduces asexually by mitosis and cytokinesis. Sexual phenomena have not been directly observed in Amoeba, although sexual exchange of genetic material is known to occur in other Amoebozoan groups.

To do this, we create an image, save it, reopen it to make a slight change (such an image rotation or position change), save the new image, and repeat--- and we eventually end with a series of images that can appear animated once they are all put into a movie editing program in order.

Among lower eukaryotes such as Acanthamoeba, the mode of reproduction is generally considered to be asexual, i.e., mother cell divides into two daughter cells via binary fission or in simple terms, amoebae do not need any genetic material from another organism to reproduce.

Similar to diffusion, osmosis is the movement of molecules (water molecules if osmosis) from a high concentration to a low concentration. The video clip explains that you can also look at water as moving to a Higher concentration of solute molecules.
