Back in action for the first time since 2020, Jon Jones wants to become a two-division champion. Standing in his way is former contender Ciryl Gane. The two are ready to face one another for the vacant UFC heavyweight title at UFC 285 on March 4 in Las Vegas.
Jones last fought in February 2020 and is fighting in T-Mobile Arena for the first time since 2010. Gane will be making his T-Mobile Arena debut.
Jones is considered one of the greatest MMA fighters of all time. The former UFC light heavyweight champion has beaten several MMA greats, including Stephan Bonnar, Mauricio Rua, Quinton Jackson, Lyoto Machida, Vitor Belfort, and Glover Teixeira. The only loss he suffered was via a DQ. Jones has been nearly untouchable throughout his career, minus positive drug tests.
“Bones'’” decision to move up in weight, per the man himself, was a business move. He wanted more of a challenge and better pay. Jones got what he asked for with a new eight-fight deal.

“I wasn’t happy with my pay, either. I’m stuck fighting guys like Reyes — who had been dreaming of fighting me, probably since college, and [he] was just relatively unknown to the general public. I just wanted more, I wanted to be nervous again,” Jones said onUnlocking the Cage with Jimmy SmithviaMMA Fighting. I wanted to have fear again. I think fear is healthy, and now we’re in this position. The heavyweight division has never been scarier, and I’m glad to be in the middle of it.”
There was interest in a fight with Francis Ngannou, who left the UFC over a salary dispute. Jones now faces Gane, who is 8-1 in the UFC. The French fighter will be competing for the UFC heavyweight title for the second time. He lost to Ngannou for the belt at UFC 270 last January.

When Jones signed for the heavyweight title fight, he signed a new eight-fight deal with the UFC. His advisor, Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer, told Ariel Helwani on The MMA Hour that his current salary is at the top of the UFC’s heavyweight division.
“That deal which we made for Jon — in the history of the UFC — makes Jon now the highest-paid Heavyweight athlete. Overall, I think as [UFC Chief Business Officer] Hunter [Campbell] mentioned to me, probably the second highest number next to Conor McGregor,” Schaefer saidvia Bloody Elbow.

In his last fight against Dominick Reyes, Jones made about $540,000. That includes fight bonuses.
It is unknown the exact amount both will make at UFC 285. However, per The Sports Daily, Jones made about $12,000 in his debut fight in 2008. When he won the UFC light heavyweight title in 2011 against Mauricio Rua, Jones took home $140,000. The highest salary Jones earned, until recently, was in 2017, when a win against Daniel Cormier was deemed a no-contest after testing positive for Turinabol. He earned $580,000.
