Jonathan Lawes is a graphic abstract artist and designer based in south east London.
His artistic journey began in Salisbury, before completing a Foundation Diploma in Art at Bournemouth followed by a BA in Printed Textiles & Surface Pattern Design at Leeds Arts University. He then spent the best
part of a decade living and working in Berlin, before relocating to the UK in 2018 to develop his practice further.
Jonathan creates prints with a distinctly graphic edge, reflecting his love of geometry, shape and pattern. He has a keen eye for nuance and layering, paying close
attention to colour and detail. Abstract compositions are formed organically and develop over time. Jonathan has a genuine and enduring enthusiasm for the screen
printing process, which he is always seeking to evolve.
The way that he approaches creating his compositions can vary but are not premeditated; they form over time either through directly printing onto the surface of the paper or collaging together mixed media elements like card or paper, that he adds at a later date.
Colour is an element that is greatly affected by the seasons. He gravitates towards colours that reflect the landscape he observes from his studio by the Thames and finds that he creates a series of works in variations of tonal colours which he only realises when looking back at certain works made in a certain period of time.
