Everyone in the Portokalos family worries about Toula (Nia Vardalos). Still unmarried at 30 years old, she works at Dancing Zorba's, the Greek restaurant owned by her parents, Gus (Michael Constantine) and Maria (Lainie Kazan). After taking a job at her aunt's travel agency, she falls in love with Ian Miller (John Corbett), a teacher who is tall, handsome and definitely not Greek. Toula isn't sure which will be more upsetting to her father, that Ian is a foreigner or that he's a vegetarian.

Critics Consensus

Though it sometimes feels like a television sitcom, My Big Fat Greek Wedding is good-hearted, lovable, and delightfully eccentric, with a sharp script and lead performance from Nia Vardalos.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding | Rotten Tomatoes (1) Joshua Rothkopf Chicago Reader Second City alum Nia Vardalos stars in this ethnic comedy, which she also wrote -- an ambitious way to break into a leading role; too bad the results are insubstantial. Apr 4, 2012 Full Review My Big Fat Greek Wedding | Rotten Tomatoes (2) Nell Minow Common Sense Media Perfect sleepover movie for tweens (and moms!). Rated: 5/5 Dec 26, 2010 Full Review My Big Fat Greek Wedding | Rotten Tomatoes (3) Time Out The result feels a little over-egged at times and the love match lacks chemistry, but Ian's whistlestop induction into a different style of language, food, drink, dress and dancing allows a few good one-liners. Minah A Y'all don't even try to diss this movie 😮‍💨 I freaking love my big fat Greek wedding and will shout it from every single rooftop in the world!!!1!1 What I really love about this movie is how relatable it is. Toula is literally me?? I'm not Greek Greek but I'm arab and my family is literally her family if it were in a movie. My family is humongous, patriotic about our home country, and are very very loud. The way toula interacts with her family is just so real and how she's kinda sick and tired of them a lil bit like OMGGG that's so real brah. Hashtag spit your fax babe! One thing I can say tho is that if you can't relate to this movie then it prob won't be your favorite movie everr..my friends who I've peer pressured into watching this movie said they didn't get it and found it boring and they have very small hashtag suburban families so I guess I get why they don't like it but whatevs ig. I love this movie and personally believe that this movie deserved all the rewards and nominations!!! We don't talk about the sequels though. Anywhosen I would actually wanna give a big smooch to everyone involved in this movie cause oh my freaking god I love you all so much. Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 08/09/24 Full Review Diana M I remember us going to the movie theater the year it came out. It was probably the only movie I ran out after watching it for about 45 min.I tried watching it again - still same reaction. Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 03/26/24 Full Review Laura L This great comedy always puts a big smile on my face! In short, the daughter of the Portokal Greek family ("portokal", in Greek, means "orange") marries the son of the Miller American family ("miller" comes also from a Greek word that means "apple"). And as the father of the bride concludes, "Although different, we're all fruits." If I may, I would add that "Although we're all fruits in God's orchard, somehow, some are sweet and others are sour" - just to keep the joyful spirit of the movie. :-) The Greek (Orthodox) wedding tradition is slightly but successfully exaggerated for comedy purposes, but not very far from the truth - please, trust my (Orthodox) word of honor! If you could see me, I'm writing and largely smiling only thinking about this comedy. Enjoy the movie! Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/02/24 Full Review Daryl D Use the Windex!!!!!!!
