It's so upsetting that you call customer care to ask about having to set bandwidth limits on each line. I have 10 lines and I want to set a bandwidth limit on certain line (kids) and I was told I had to pay for smart limits (4.99 per line) so I when ahead and added the ferure but to my surprise AT&T employees don't know there own products because it still doesn't add data limits. All it does it has spending limits, text limits, & data turn off. Why would I pay 4.99 per line just to manually turn data off and watch for next month and turn it off when they reach my desire limit ( keep in mind I have to check every day to see how much they used and turn it off when they reach my desire limit) why does AT&T does this? Why is it all about making a quick buck on people. They don't have that because they want u to go over and pay hefty data charges. There got to be a way to prevent it, why when the government is up everyone business why haven't they made this a require feature to prevent cell phone companies from taking advantage of customers!

Perhaps because bandwidth is the wrong term?
You are right, smart limits do not cap individual data limits. I pay enough for my service, I refuse to pay for more. ( like AT&T Navigator. Why? I can use Google Maps for free? )

This worked like a charm, only one annoying month, one unhappy kid:
I set alerts for total data usage, I get a text message when the data use reaches my chosen levels. I set 65%.
If it messages me before half the month is up, I know somebody is being a data hog. I set up every phone to do major data activities over wifi.
When I get the message, I checked to see which kid is watching YouTube on cellular. Issue a warning to said data hog.
STRIKE 1
I check in a couple of days to make sure data use on the line has dropped. If not, warning #2
STRIKE 2
I check again in a couple of days, last warning, now I shut data off on that line, which requires I call support to restore.
SSSSTRIIIIIIKE 3 and OUT.
It only needed to be done once. I showed them how to check their own data, the one miserable child was a sad example for his sibling.
I have never had to repeat the lesson.

Regardless of bandwidth vs DATA the fact that they had the set limits and then remove it and still expect customers to pay for it and it still call it smart limits is beyond me! Your answer is more of a personal opionion in which I am no way near interested.. I'm more interested in ways around it and setting notifications may work with 2/3/4 lines but it's rather pointless when I have more then 10 lines in which I need to watch data hogs! Thanks for your opion but not what am looking for!!!!!

Opinion.... That smart limits is a misnomer and you should cancel it, okay, yes. My opinion is, it is useless for your purpose.

I offered a tip, one parent to another, that worked for me

Here is another, but it only works on cell phones with the settings for it.
Samsung, and some other android phones have settings on the phone to limit data. Of course, a child can remove it easily. It can be found in the mobile data portion of the phone.

I prefer to teach self discipline and keep a full head of hair, my sanity and sense of humor.

Dont get me wrong, I'm greatful for the advised and for sure I will cancel it.. My point for this post's are really hopefull the higher end pencil pushers will read this and see what type of service they are providing us the consumers.. Specially for me I been with AT&T since 1999. They don't care and for them to remove the first only feature that was useful from the entire parental control feature is beyond me. They do things without thinking of the consequences to others pockets.. With 10 lines and data prices so high is annoying.

Even with the new feature coming to use this month I beleive I read the 20 of this month that roll over data it comes with a trick.. Not the usual RollOver we are use to in which the minutes stay up to 12 months now with the Data RollOver it will only roll to the next month and expire! So if you have 2 gigs roll over and u don't used them next month it will expire and if you used them nothing roll overs to that next month because they will used your plan data first before the roll over ones.

Hey @DLance

I’d love to help with your data limits need! Depending on the devices being used, data limits can often be set on the phone itself. For example, with Samsung devices you would head to Settings>Connections>Data Usage and check the Limit mobile data usage box. This will automatically turn off data access when the red line is met, which is set to the max allowed data for that line.

See here for steps.

Of course, this requires a compatible device. If you are using Mobile Share Value, you can turn off data access for any of your lines on an individual basis should they be using too much data.

  1. Select myAT&T at the top of the page. If prompted, log in.
  2. Hover over Billing & Usage at the top of the page and then select Usage Since Last Bill located under Usage.
  3. Next to Data for the device, select the link Turn on/off this member's data, and then select one of the following:
  • Turn On (Activate) to turn data usage back on for that device.
  • Turn Off (Deactivate) to turn data usage off for that device.
  • Select Submit.
  • To restore data services - including picture and video messaging - power off the device you reactivated, then power it back on again.
  • If this helps, please mark this answer as an accepted solution!

    Thanks,

I have no interest what so ever to set limits via the device itself.. Kids know way around them and it just disgusting that AT&T thinks is ok to still charge for the smart limits which is does nothing that the regular account management does. The only tool we had to protect ourselves with helping us from data overage charges. Even currently the calls that it list a person makes on smart limits its not accurate and it randomly displays certain calls and leaves others out.. I'm beyond upset with this. Is ok I'm getting everyone together and porting to T-Mobile.. Since AT&T doesn't care that I been with them since 1992 before it turn to Cingular and back to AT&T.... It's time for a healthy change cause I'm tire of all the bull from AT&T not giving a dam about there customers.. We pay the bill and we should deceive what we used that's helpful.

    Sincerely,

    Noah G

That was my intentions. So many years of being with them and so many changes I see gone with the community being involve. All they care for is money and the only logic reason for them to removing the data limits is to cause customers to go over there data and be bill, it's all about a money and how much they can squeeze out of there loyal customers.
