Does TitleMax go on your credit? ›

At TitleMax, we use the title to your car as your collateral in most states, rather than your credit history. So, when you give us your car title, we give you cash.

Effective January 1st, 2021, TitleMax® is no longer offering new loans in the state of Virginia. This doesn't change the terms of any existing/outstanding loans or impact your obligation to repay your loan in accordance with its terms.

TitleMax, a prominent lending company, experienced a data breach in February 2023, compromising personal information. TMX Finance, the parent company, disclosed the breach in March 2023. A class-action lawsuit was filed against TMX Finance, alleging negligence and delayed notification to consumers.

In many cases, the lender will accept partial payments (or no payments) for a short amount of time. This is called forbearance. You might also be able to renegotiate your loan, which is known as loan modification.

If a person buys a vehicle without putting it in their name and then sells it, it is known as title jumping. This illegal act is also referred to as title skipping or floating. When there is a jumped title issue, the new buyer cannot register the car in their name with the DMV.

The business of car title lending is legal in Virginia. However, there are state laws that put restrictions and limits on who can conduct business as a car title lender, what the loan company has to do in order to be licensed, and what happens if they don't meet those requirements.

Since reorganization, TitleMax continued expanding into other states. On August 12, 2016, a judge in Nevada ordered over 6,000 TitleMax contracts to be voided. In November 2019, the company announced the closure of all California locations by May 2020.

Your title loan won't show up on your credit report right away. Lenders, including title loan companies, typically report to credit bureaus every month, so it could take about 30 days for a new loan to show up. Your title loan will remain on your credit report while you pay it off.

The CFPB found that TitleMax violated the Military Lending Act by extending prohibited title loans to military families and, oftentimes, by charging nearly three times over the 36% annual interest rate cap.
