How were pizza rolls created?

As you shop the frozen food aisle of the grocery store, you may have seen Totino’s Pizza Rolls. Our recipe for pizza roll ups is a variation of them, but of course, much more delicious.

Jeno Paulucci invented Pizza Rolls in 1968. His original business was prepared Chinese foods. You may recognize his name as the infamous Jeno’s Pizza Rolls, which was acquired by PIllsbury in 1985. Several years later, the name was changed to Totino’s.

What is a rolled up pizza called?

This pizza roll ups recipe is also similar to what many restaurants would call a stromboli, which is a tightly rolled up pizza. Our roll ups are sliced into one inch thick pieces, making them easier to eat.

How to make Pizza Roll Ups?

This recipe uses store bought pizza dough, dramatically decreasing the amount of time you might spend making dough from scratch. Homemade pizza dough requires time to rise, while store bought dough is pre-risen and nearly ready to use.

Using mozzarella cheese and pepperoni creates an authentic pizza taste in a small appetizer-sized bite. Another benefit is, everything will stay in place when you slice the roll.

Serve the roll ups with a cup of marinara sauce for dipping. It is the perfect finishing touch!

Are Pizza Roll Ups healthy?

Honestly, we’re eating pizza rolls because they are delicious and we can’t resist that buttery crisp dough.

While pizza roll ups are not the healthiest meal, they are healthier than the deep fried appetizers you see at many parties.

To keep the calories low, serve them in smaller portions, as appetizers. One serving is six pizza rolls, which equals approximately 220 calories. Truthfully, that is much less than the 940 calories of calzones.

For a healthier option, serve the rolls with healthy greens, like thisGreek salad.
